You did it all wrong. First you get and read the repair manual for the tractor before you take it apart. Some of those lift covers are a bit tricky to remove and replace. Now you don't know what may have dropped into the rear housing and as you have discovered you will need to drain all fluids to inspect the base. No I would not try to weld or braze the cover. There were a lot of those old work bulls around and I am sure you can buy one from a tractor salvage company. Many of us here on this site have made a few mistakes when trying to repair our prize tractors and other mechanical toys without first checking how it should be done. Now we are more experienced but not always smarter. LOL
