A quart of oil every 3000 miles or so is typical. There is nothing wrong with the engine. Even the older 454's were known for doing that. Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W30 and a ~180 degree thermostat cut oil consumption significantly. It's a heat thing.
It was designed to run with the diesels from around 2001. If you're expecting it to compete with a brand new Duramax or 6.7 Cummins or Powerstroke, you're just being stupid.
I'm getting just shy of 12MPG driving empty with mine. Towing goes from 7-10 depending on what it is and how far.
