What do you mean by 'early' 4000. If you're talking about a 62-64 round hood model, then no... they are different tractors and the transmission will not fit. If you're talking about an early version of the 'world' 4000 (65-mid 68) with a square hood... then the answer is mabey. Generally speaking that swap can be made but IIRC, the SOS tractors used a different crown/pinion combination in the rear end and the hydraulic pumps were located in different locations... so if you want to do that swap the best thing is to simply mate your engine to the new rear half and go like that. IIRC, it also requires a flywheel change on the engine as the flywheel needs to stay with the appropriate transmission. Outside of that, it should work fine.
