Steve, the Tractor Vet's advice may be a little obscure, but accurate nontheless. Tthe shift lever has a little ball on the end and that may need to be built back up and turned down to better fit the rails that shift the gears. the top of the trans. will have to come off the tractor and then you can see the wear on the end of the shift lever and what repairs are needed.
one caveat, this is the situation with my IH tractor and probably yours. good luck.
