Had a KS water bed. Trashed that but kept the wood frame/sides and all that. Bought a mattress to fit the frame which had high sides to contain the WB, but once you put a regular mattress on it and someone sits on the side of the bed, they don't crush the mattress because the frame is the same height as a mattress.
Bought el cheapo mattress for less than $400 for a KS and then went to JC Penny and bought one of their 2" foam tops....same stuff that the whole mattress is made of for a $1k or more where the mattress stores sell you the foam mattress. No box springs; just the plywood floor to the WB.
