I was eating dinner in a downtown restaurant in Portland, Maine, when the waitress asked if I minded if I shared the booth with another man. Told her that would be fine with me, so she seated him in my booth.
It turned out that he was from New York City, in Portland for telephone training. He said that people in New York City would never let someone share a booth. We talked and I told the waitress to let us know if she needed the booth; that we would leave if she asked.
The dinner crowd thinned out and we sat and talked for almost 4 hours of pleasant conversation.
