they are generally big (1/4 inch) pop rivets. I have just used short 1/4 inch blots to fasten things back together before, a bit more difficult than using the big pop rivets but if you do not have the tool...
Use a large bit and drill the head off the aluminum pop rivet for removal, the little stub left in the center is hard stuff to drill.
I think Harbor Freight has the large pop rivet tools.
