IIRC, there are only two covered bridges left in NC. There were two in our county until a few years ago, when one fell into the creek due to lack or upkeep. In NC, when a stretch of roadway or bridge is discontinued use by the state, ownership reverts back to the land owner, who either has to maintain it or let it decay unless there is enough interest for some organization to take it over. The remaining bridge was swept away by a flash flood a few years ago, but it was so well known that it was rebuilt. Many people volunteered time and they salvaged all they could of the timbers that had washed down the river and were able to use much of the original material. It is now designated as a historical landmark.
