Texasmark1: It costs me right around $.90 per lbs to put the weight on the calf. So you have to buy the calf right or you will not make anything. Right now you can clear about $100-125 per head. That is giving yourself market value for the feed.
My boys and I argue about that some. I tell them they can still gain even if they are just getting the market price for their crops. How is that?? Well the easiest is the value of the manure. I buy very little extra fertilizer. Also I feed a lot of forages that are cheap gain for cattle. Then I also feed high moisture corn that does not have to be dried.
So all in all I can make money feeding cattle if the calf prices are reasonable. The trouble is that they are way out of reason right now.
