Bill I was not trying to just be a smart butt in my earlier post. The transmission grinding issue of JD Gators has been there since day one. They just use a variable pulley set that loosens the belt at dead idle. In neutral the belt rubbing the center of the pulley is enough for it to windmill. IF you shift it into gear slowly it will windmill enough to grind like crazy. So you just need to shift it faster into gear. Like I said earlier, you POP it into gear. NOT force it just shift it fast. If it does not go in and grinds go back to neutral and try again. Also if your on a grade let it roll just a little in the direction you want to go in, pop it in while rolling just a little. They will not grind as much.
It sounds like you have gotten the idle slower. This will help but they always will grind a little because they use the belt drive and not a true clutch.
