I strongly recommend getting a tent LARGER than what you think you will need. Tents seem to shrink in size when you're confined inside during a sudden rainstorm.
I also strongly recommend that you get a porta-potty & privacy shelter/change room for the females in your group; they don't take kindly to squatting over a hole in the ground the way us guys do.
I've been backpacking / tent-camping most of my life; in fact I was tent-camping on my mining claim all of last week.
