You certainly want to have the inspection plate back on there to keep out a lot of things like dirt, and in the winter time, road slime that will get into the starter and freeze up on its shaft and keep the drive (bendix) from being able to move out into the flywheel teeth that will have build up frozen in them too. Been there, done that...never again.
I missed the post. Gasoline engine? Dual plate and disk? If so, that clutch was bullet proof. Don't overdue grease on the transmission main input shaft because centrifugal force will cause it to want to fly outward and no doubt cause some to end up on the pressure plate or clutch disk faces. That wouldn't be good. It would cause slippage. Clean and enclosed (inspection cover) is a better idea.
