I think there is a general fear versus a religion-based hatred. Most animal bites are painful and even when there is a non-venomous snake involved there still is the potential issue of tetanus. I think the reason the serpent is mentioned in the Bible is the fact that medical technology was in its infancy and there was a very real possibility an infant could die just as an infant could die today although it is far less likely an infant at least here would be raised where they would be prone and far removed from a medical facility. It was making people aware of a very real issue. I think the reason pork was forbidden was that whether domesticated or wild hogs were a predator to most snakes so if hogs were plentiful locally they would minimize the number of snakes. My two cents.
