I worked with our kids a lot from preschool through 2nd grade to help them:
1. learn phonetic reading and to instill an enjoyment/love of reading
2. memorize math facts
3. learn how to solve math problems
4. practice printing skills (and later cursive writing)
Because reading, writing and arithmetic are still the three most vital skills to learn in school, in my opinion. Morals, ethics, and common sense - we teach at home.
Other than that, they were expected to be responsible for their own homework. If they had a question, I would help them figure out how to do a sample math problem or work on a sample English assignment - once they understood... off to the dining room to complete their homework in quiet surroundings (no T.V. or loud radio allowed).
And yes, it was very hectic. Come home, do your homework, eat, get our daily chores done... entire family collapse into bed! But by 3rd grade they were all good students and avid readers - all able to be mostly responsible for getting both schoolwork and chores done (sometimes needed a reminder though).
And yes, we always had to sign-off in their school agenda booklet.
Our eldest is 24 years old... so this system has been around for quite a long time.
