Well I have a 1992 JD 6400 MFWD with a JD 640 loader. It just turned over 16,000 hours. One drive shaft and transmission input shaft, one head gasket, and several PTO switches. That is about all I have done to the tractor. It gets ran every single day.
Things to look for?? The rack and pinion axles and casting make the tractor be heavier in the rear for loader work. They commonly have a rattle in the transmission at dead idle, it should go away with just a little engine speed. Mine has done it since new. The cab models have to have the cab filters blown out regularly. I do mean every 50-100 hours. They pull the air off the floor in through the filters. Livestock guys with mud and manure on their feet, make dust that will plug the filters fast.
There really is not a common trouble area on them. They have been a real dependable tractor around here at least.
