That is one way to approach the biggest problem with automotive alternators when running under larger loads. It's pretty easy to build a 10SI alternator to put out 140 amps but if they are used at that output for more than a couple minutes they will fail. A 40SI alternator may have the same output but they use three sets of rectifier bridges to spread the load to help keep them cool.
If you need a 10SI type alternator with a higher output you should consider the 12SI series. It has the same size case and mounting but uses a more efficient fan and larger cooling vents.
