2 possibilities come to mind...you may have a bad internal hydraulic leak, bleeding off all the available oil to the hydraulic system, or the hex shaft from the crankshaft to the charge pump has stripped, not allowing the charge pump to turn. When you "clutch"it it may move the hex shaft enough for it to get a temporary bite and start turning the charge pump again.This would give you the hammering sound you are hearing as the front pump starts making pressure again. To check the hex shaft, remove the top link bracket,remove the plug behind it and the hex shaft should be able to be pulled out for inspection. If it has stripped it will be very noticeable,(rounded off instead of hex shaped either at the crankshaft end or about 12 inches in from the end you removed it from where it drives the charge pump. Had the same thing happen on a 4430.
