: : Help! Not paying attention to the old adage "don't fix it until its broke", I wanted to do some preventive maintenance on my '74 JD 140HD garden tractor. It started by replacing the head gasket, plug, points and condenser. My neighbor who also has a 140 and is very good with all small engines (especially the 14hp Kohler on my 140) also recommended that I replace the carburator since the old one was worn. Thinking it a good idea, we replaced the carb, along with new air filter and all the new gaskets. Now the problem, with the tractor under a load like mowing, it has a terrible miss and almost shuts the tractor down. Give it a second and it comes back up again and everything is fine. Rough terrain seems to add to the problem of the missing. Soooo, after adjusting the carb until we had turned it every which way which we have it running perfectly under no load (both low and high rpm), we started the following; replaced the fuel filter with original equipment (in the tank filter) and ran new fuel line to the new carb and tried a new plug, no good. After awhile I took it to my local JD dealer for him to fix it (same old I got the parts from). He thought it was electrical and checked the points and wire to the points, coil and coil wire, replaced the iginition switch and finally ordered and tried a new carb and fuel line all with no improvement. He checked the engine compression and said I was alittle low at 70 lbs and said it should have been 100 lbs. Being that he checked both the electrical and fuel systems completely he thought a new valve job and maybe rings would be the next step. Now I am more irritated at myself than at the tractor and don't really know where to go next. I ordered new valves and my neighbor and I will install. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or something I may have missed. I appreciate any response. Thanks.

: Fritz, I had a terrible miss in my 140 that nothing we could think of would cure. It always occured at high RPM and usually under load (lots of vibration). One day in frustration I smacked the dash with my fist and the durn thing smoothed out and ran fine for a short distance. Further investigation disclosed a loose wire on the ammeter. Tightening has since cured the elusive miss. This may not be your problem, but it's worth a quick check. Good luck. Jogg.
