Broke a rod in my Wheelhorse

I have a 1973 12hp Wheelhorse with a Kohler engine that just broke a rod. After getting the engine apart, I found the crank in good shape but it chipped two chunks out of the bottom of the bore. The chunks that broke out are about 5/8" up the bore and about 1" along the circumfrence. My question is how much bore damage will this engine (K301 Series) tolerate before I have to replace the block? What kinds of salvage methods are there to keep from having to replace the block? What kind of experiences have people had with sort of thing? Here's hoping I don't have to put the old horse down......
