I've been told the salting was for peace of mind and actually does little to help the hay. Salt is hygroscopic, or whatever the word is that means "it draws moisture". But the moisture we're concerned with is within the bale and down deep in a stack. I think you could bury the hay in salt and the moisture down in the stack wouldn't change much. But it does make the hay tastier and the stock needs it and we feel better.
A tedder is the greatest tool in the world for getting hay dry, but it can't replace sunshine and a good warm breeze.
