I don't get what the age of the tires had to do with it - even if they were worn out. Unless they were so worn the tube was pushing through the tire.
I helped my brother mount what had to be half tread 40 year old 18.4 X 38s on his 1456 last summer. He thought buying new tubes was going too far but I told him I wouldn't help him a second time if he put the old tubes back in that came with the tires.
