A bad tensioner (weak)can allow a belt to be controlled at normal (observation) speeds but allow belt whip to set up radical hysteric vibrations in the belt between the last pulley before the Water pump, and the Pump pulley. This vibration might only occur at certain speeds and can be radically over taxing the bearings. A way to prevent the oscillations of the belt is to make a belt guide for the distance between the pulleys. This can be made from oiled hardwood and needs to clear the belt by 3/16 to 1/4 inch. I have seen this problem on machines and blowers as well as vehicles. The guide is cheaper, and can be diagnostic as well as curative. Jim
