It will not make a great deal of diference unless it has a charging system. If you put a battery in the tractor and the amp gauge shows a plus charge when the tractor is not running you have the cables on wrong. If the tractor is running and you see a several amp discharge the cables are reversed. On a magneto system the polarity of the battery does not affect the ignition as the mag is the source of the spark
