Here in Michigan, I always figure about 1- 1 1/2 ac per cow and that's just enough to feed the cows, not make hay. Of course that depends on soil type and plant density/quality. I wouldn't think with the acres and head he has, he will find any forage left for hay, except maybe during the spring flush, assuming the cows haven't destroyed the field already. Rule of thumb is to graze no less than 3-4" to avoid stressing the seeding. That's my 2 cents anyway.
