Amp meter *should* have nothing to do with the starter, unless some idiot wired the starter through the amp meter!!!
One fat cable should go from the battery to the starter switch, and then to the starter. Early Super Ms have a starter button that you kicked, so there is a short cable from the switch to the starter. Later Super M's have a starter button mounted directly on the starter, where you pull a rod, so there is no extra cable.
The other fat cable should go from the other post on the battery to a bolt on the tractor's chassis somewhere.
The fat cable should NOT go up into the wiring box on the steering post.
