This happened in the 60's. Knew a fellow that was about to retire from the army so was going to buy a house. Had no credit. Bank told him to go to Sears and buy a washer and dryer and charge it to get a line of credit then come back. Had a president of a bank tell me, the only way we could treat these old people any worse is to tell them to take their money home and put it in a matress.
