Sorry to hear that, but at least you don't have a pack of funerals to go, I swear it comes in three's!
I would imagine that if something wrapped around the shaft and could violate the seal, likely it, seems to be common to a lot of similar components, somehow works its way in there.
All is not lost, 4 cord, nice score, and will be some relief once you know its split, always nice to know you have next winters firewood on hand.
I've got more to do, I'm close on whats split and stacked for next winter, but I will be going after as much as I can. This weather took a turn for the nice, but the black flies and gnats are as worse as I have ever seen them, just swarm you, don't seem to bite, yet !!! LOL !
