When I paint a tractor, I like to take the sheet metal off and paint them seperately.
My biggest mistake was using a 4000 psi pressure washer. I damaged lots of gaskets, valve cover. Got water in where it shouldn't go. My Jubilee got water in the hydraulics. Draining the hydraulics still left about a pint of water because the drain hole was towards the back of sump and water ran forward. I thought I was careful using the pressure washer, bad idea.
Now I put on the soap, let it sit, wire brush, scrap and wash off with garden hose.
