It keeps the RPM up to protect the automatic transmission by keeping it pumping enough fluid to cool and lubricate it all. I had the 3.73 gears ( I think) and as long as you kept a light throttle it wouldn't unlock above about 58-59. If you could keep it above 60 and vary your speed to keep it there without much throttle application it did pretty well. Typically got 16-18, 20-21 when trying, and best was about 23 1/4 on a long trip.
