Well... you should remember that you got a 1/2 ton with 3/4 ton springs and nothing more. It's probably got 3.55 rear as well... and a blistering 180 hp from the 302. They weren't too bad for what they were... but not a heavy hauler. Just the same... I frequently enough haul 3-5000# with a 4.0L Ranger so you can get by with this setup. Otherwise you can go out an buy a truck with a 351 Windsor, 4.10 gears, floating axles... and then tow a gas trailer behind it to cover those 30 mile trips.
