I'm about 40 miles south of Lynchburg. Lots of rain has made the creeks and rivers unfriendly for boating. Can't help you with the fishing but Sightseeing will be okay...don't forget Appomattox is just east of Lynchburg on US 460. Being Southern, I'm not much on surrender sites but the reconstructed village is very well done. If you travel in that direction (460 East), Green Front Furniture in Farmville is quite a place to visit, especially for your wife...it basically takes up the entire downtown business district and several old factory buildings...lots to see and the prices are very reasonable...people come from all over to shop there.
