Depending on how his knee is; he probably should get it x-rayed so the doc will know what he injured. Not going to the doc may result in some permanent damage to the knee.
I banged up my knee in a minor accident just after I graduated from high school 61 years ago. Next morning my knee was swollen so bad that I couldn't bend it - had to sit and slide down the stairs. Turned out that I had broken the shell over the knee cap. Doc recommended surgery over cast; said it would just break again as soon as he took the cast off.
Didn't hurt too much after surgery until I had to get on the tractor and start swathing grain. The vibration made that knee ache like crazy; almost made me cry but there wasn't anyone else around to do that job.
