I would bet that he checked the low side as he said he went to fill it. He should have been on the low side to add any freon.
Those self fill cans with a gauge cause as many problems as they solve. Too many guys never check anything else and just throw some more freon in a full system. I get a few locked up compressors each year because of over filling. Most times the condenser and evaporator are completely plugged but they throw freon at it because that is what the coffee shop guys tell them to do. Plus many fellows never change the cab filter until it is completely plugged and then they blow it half out an think it is as good as new.
