The nitrogen on the oats reminds me of a story dad told me. During the war he worked for local farmers as a hired hand because he was classified as 4F because of acne and a broken ankle that didn't heal right.
One day he pitched on a load of manure for a farmer but the farmer was gone when he had the spreader full, so he spread it in the oats, making a kind of a horseshoe shaped track. The oats were just coming up so he didn't do any damage but when the farmer came home he told dad to NEVER spread manure on oats ground because the oats will grow real tall and then fall over. When they fall over the binder will have trouble picking them up. A couple of months later when the oats were ripe there was a horseshoe shaped pattern of oats that had grown tall and fallen over.
