I agree with my professor friend, there are specified LOCATIONS where GFCI is required and Arc Fault Interrupters DO NOT satisfy that requirement far as I know. The purpose of GFCI is Life Safety to prevent electrocution by opening the circuit if there is as little as like 5 milliamps difference in current flow in the Hot UnGrounDED Conductor that is NOT being returned by the Neutral GrounDED Conductor (i.e. its leaking elsewhere, could be through your ticker OUCH). The purpose of AFCI is to open the circuit when low current (insufficient to trip the circuit breaker) yet extremely high temperature producing arcs take place which can start a fire.
When in doubt, consult local trained professional electricians, engineers, utility providers and inspection authority versus reliance on lay person opinions.
