.22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle are the "common" .22s out there. Most single shots will shoot all three. Most semi autos will require the .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR).
Bolt actions are usually chambered for .22 LR, they may not properly feed a .22 Long or a .22 Short but most likely there wouldn't be an issue firing the smaller rounds in them if you got one to chamber. I would only do that if you were in a "had to" situation.
My Henry lever action shoots all three without an issue - as it is designed to.
