: : Good News and Bad News, I just bought the cutest John Deere 40S and after rebuilding the carb it runs great but..... Last night it quit and when you switch the lights on, the tractor quits. The battery was in with negative to ground so I am checking the voltage regulator and key/light switch. What I need is where the wires to the voltage regulator go. They are marked Bat, F and it looks like a L. There is also a wire to the back of the regulator. I will get the IT manual as soon as I can but would like to get this machine back together before that. Thanks guys . Dan

: Hello Dan; on the regulator there should be three terminals, one marked F, this goes to F on the generator(thats field) second one is G or on some marked as A, this goes to A on the generator, third one marked with B, this is the battery power and goes to yer ammeter! Any problems just e-mail me and we'll try and get ya WIRED! Randy Swain
THANKS guys, I tried cleaning the ignition switch, no change, sometimes it starts on ignition but will quit when you turn on the lights. The Voltage Regulator is marked from L to R (F) (Bat) (L) and a wire goes to the underside of the regulator and marked (Gen) I have 2 wires to the Gen, one to the ampmeter and a fused wire to the center of the ignition switch. the tractor was negative grounded when I got it so I dont trust any of the existing wiring. Thanks for the help guys. Dan

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
