Waste oil was good enough for an engine when drained. It was also filtered to engine specs, probably better than when poured out of the original can. Sure it has some dark stuff in it, but still lubricates the engine. Just have to drain it into a clean container.
Generally oil on chains is better than nothing, except maybe in sandy conditions. Small pressurized sprayer tank works well for application.
