'Varying degrees of non-success' means jury rigged repairs of cables like that almost always are unsuccessful. Some fail right away and other fail a little later. Almost every time the cable isn't going to push-pull as easy as a new one or the homemade crimp end won't hold, or is cocked a little or........
Back when I didn't have any money, or less than I have now, I tried many times to fix broken cables like that and most of the efforts were just a waste of time, even though I learned something.
You can sometimes find a cable at an army surplus that can be made to fit but it's hit-and-miss at best. I have a couple of army surplus cables hanging in the store room waiting to be retrofitted to something. Coleman's and Army Surplus Warehouse are two that I know of that have good websites. My Oliver 88 has a choke cable that's army surplus. It even has 'choke' on the button and is green colored. It was twelve feet long and I cut it to the length I needed. Jim
