"HP is HP" yes, but if you measure the actual power being produced by a "5HP" engine on a log splitter, even under maximum load, it's nowhere near 5HP.
The splitter has a 5HP gasoline engine because it's the smallest engine that can produce enough torque to handle the sudden increase in load that occurs when you pull the handle.
The electric motor produces 100% of its rated torque from 0 RPMs, so it doesn't need to have as high of a peak output to handle the load from the splitter.
