In a late season like this one using some starter on soybeans could make a big difference. Soybeans will produce their own nitrogen when they get bigger but until then they use what is available in the soil. I have seen yield data that shows 5-8 bushels of yield response in the right year. Other years when fertility is not a limiting issue there is very little yield response. This year that early rapid growth may make a huge difference.
Truthfully if I was planting soybeans in marginal soils and it got late. I would use starter fertilizer on them.
You may need every advantage you can get if this cool weather keeps up all summer. Early fall/frosts could be a real possibility this year.
