It will get pretty dark over time. In the tractors I have that get a lot of hydraulic usage, like a loader tractor, I change the hydraulic oil every 500 hours. The rest I usually go every 1000 hours. I know that may be more often than needed but the transmissions and pumps cost a lot to fix these days.
I usually keep the drained oil and use it in simple hydraulic systems like on a dump trailer or something like that. I have a 275 gallon tank I keep it in. I filter it into the tank and have a pump/filter on the outlet side. Every now and then I drain the bottom of the tank off and use the settle oil for some non mechanical usage. like oiling the beds on the hay racks.
