Dont know anything about the size of the hammer mill but you dont want the width of the belt any wider than narowest pulley. The longer the belt the easyer it is for the wind to whip it about on a windy day.I dont know for sure how much difference the length of the belt would make unless it has something to do with the ability to tighten the belt and keep it tight. Also the longer the belt is it is easyer to line up.
