Lots of variables in determining how a tree should be cut. Species, diameter, alive, dead, straight, leaning, amount of lean, limb weight equal all around, limbs weighting one side only, log inside solid, log inside hollow, log for lumber , log for firewood, length of chainsaw bar, etc. Definitely make the notch. With the leaning variable, it may require a plunge cut to safely control the direction of fall and prevent danger to the saw operator if the trunk were to split. Watch some you-tube videos of some various cutting procedures. BE SAFE.
