I had that experience with an 88 Caravan. Burned up the original compressor clutch and two more I replaced. I finally found that the compressor pulled so hard that any time high side pressure exceeded 230 psi, it would slip and burn the clutch. To my dismay, I found my replacement compressor with a new clutch, cost little more than the two new clutches I burned up on that old failing compressor. :(
