I think one reason why we hear of soooooooo many VR problems nowadays (including contact material and quality) relates EXACTLY to what you said about the VR needs to be matched to the Gennys Field Current rating. Way back when, Delco Remy made several VR's and they were pretty closely matched to certain of their generators, nowadays Tractor Supply or Rural King etc may (not sure, havent shopped one there lately) sell a more generic 6 or 12 volt VR (one zize fits all) that farmer Billy Bob buys and wonders why it dont last long....And that dont include whether its a 2 or 3 brush genny and if youre operating at Pos or Neg ground among other many variables.
