Also a family of five- About 7-8 yrs ago got the Whirlpool Duet HE front load. It runs at least one load a day and, not to sound like a salesman, it literally uses 1/3 the water of the old style. And spins super fast so clothes come out nearly dry. I'm as old fashioned as they come and I learned to like this one. A slight learning curve is needed. I thought I lost a drum bearing a year or two ago and there are very good youtube videos showing how to change the drum bearing-it can be changed. It wasn't a bearing, it had eaten one of my dress socks, rubbed it around the outside of drum, and left it in the treasure trap in the drain, (a built in feature).
