The Delco regulator has 3 coils. The top coil is connected to the fields, the middle coil, which is made of perhaps 10g wire, is connected to the armature. The botton coil, which is also made of 10g wire goes someplace???perhaps the switch and back to the +12v.

SO MANY QUESTIONS SO LITTLE TIME, here goes hang on,,,,, below is for a Class A system.....

1) The coil/relay that wires to the gennys FLD post is the Field current control relay, its what regulates field current and rate of charge

2) The coil that wires to BAT (has a small winding plus a big outer winding) on the VR that leads up to the Load side of the ammeter that essentially connects (when closed) BAT to GEN/ARM is the CUTOUT RELAY

3) Two Relay/Coil VR's have a combination Voltage and Current control coil while 3 Relay/Coil VR's have a seperate coil for voltage control and a seperaste for current control.

4) BAT on VR to load side of ammeter,,,,GEN/ARM on VR to gennys ARM post,,,,,,,,FLD on VR to Gennys FLD post

5) If VR isnt labeled use an ohm meter: The terminal that reads like an open circuit from it to the case is BAT,,,,,,The terminal that has maybe near 0 or so up to less then 10 ohms is FLD,,,,,,,,the terminal that has maybe 20 to 50 ohms is GEN/ARM.

6) VR wont work unelss well grounded

7) The Genny NOT the VR is what gets polarized. If tractor is staretd and genmy is polarized wrong you can fry the VR


The wiring is a mess. I got the genny to charge by exciting the fields with a 12v tail light bulb.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO for max charge on a Class A system you ground the Fields....On a Class B however you full voltage them I CANT SAY SITTIN HERE WHICH YOU HAVE

At an idle the armature showed 13.68 v, however the ammeter is wired backward, it showed discharge.

There is no voltage getting to the fields when the switch is on.

If its a Class A the field needs grounded to work,,,,If its a Class B they do indeed need a voltage input

How should the voltage regulator be wired?

SEE ABOVE

A diagram would be nice, but not necessary. Shouldn"t there be 12v going to the fields when power is applied to the regulator?

YES FOR AN B NO FOR AN A SYSTEM

Should the armature wire be connected two the middle terminal of the regulator?

CANT SAY SITITN HERE, IT SHOULD CONENCT TO ARM ON VR TO ARM ON GENNY, see above to tell which is which

Should the switch power up the bottom terminal of regulator?

If its a 4 terminal VR the GEN/ARM is often off on one side or underneath all by itself. If its a 4 terminal with a LOAD terminal its what feds hot battery voltage up to Ign and Light switches

Work my troubleshootign procedure if its an A system (Most delcos were while some Ford/Autolite and some Massey Harris were B's)

The help provided here and my Troubleshooting procedure require some basic understanding, if youre not familiar at all id take it to a shop before you accidentally fry something
