JMOR, There are no markings on the VR. The wire size going to the fields and armature are both the same size, about 10 or 12 gauge. There is only an F and A stamped on the genny.
So, if I got this right, the field windings are powered up inside the genny from the + armature side which is connected to the armature brush and the VR simply supplies a ground path for the fields. The other brush going to the communtator is already connected to ground.
By connecting the Armature to the +12v, current will flow throught the field windings, creating a little residual magnetism in the fields to get the genny excited.
