Better find a wiring diagram and get things wired up CORRECTLY (with the battery disconnected), then connect up the battery and polarize the GENERATOR before starting.
Despite some "old mechanic's wive's tales" you may have heard, the GENERATOR is the component that gets polarized NOT the voltage regulator. HOWEVER, the temporary "jumpered" connection to polarize the GENERATOR may be made at the regulator, for conscience, since battery power is available there.
(IF the generator has been tested and has been charging on the bench at the correct polarity even IT does not need to be polarized when the regulaor is replaced, but it can't hurt. (IF done properly.)
